Top tool for tackling craving !
At our workshops we share a “toolkit” to help people moderate or quit drinking. We have fifteen tools in that kit so today I am sharing one of the most popular ones - just in case you need a little extra help to get you through your alcohol free month!
Play the Movie Forward – you may be already half way through your alcohol-free time and doing fine but then you just start to feel bored with the whole thing and start fantasizing about that glass of wine – you can almost taste it…
If you “play it forward” you realise it will not be just the one glass, you will feel bad in the morning and you will have lost the opportunity to prove to yourself that you are not dependent on alcohol … so not worth it - just hang in there!

Happy, happy, happy!
Going back to stone age times our ancestors were either in a state of "fight or flight" (when confronted with a wild animal) or (if they had eaten the wild animal) they were in the much more relaxed state of "rest and digest".
These days we don't have to worry about finding enough to eat but rarely are we in a truly relaxed "rest and digest" state either.
We have managed to create a world where many of us live in a constant state of anxiety, around our jobs, our kids and the state of the planet in general.
In addition we have magazines telling us that we need to be "happy" all the time - not to mention our friends on social media posting pictures of their perfect lives 24/7.
The wellness industry is packed with "feel good" ideas and "mood booster" juices to keep us in a constant state of elation.
When sadness, disappointment and/or loneliness do put in an appearance we just don't know how to cope.
When we were drinking it was easy - we just chased those feelings away with a glass or two of wine.
When we stop drinking (even for a while) we feel raw and exposed.
The trick is to realise that we were not put on this earth to be happy every single minute.
To be human is to experience the whole gamut of emotions and to learn to "sit with" whatever we are feeling in the knowledge that it will pass.
The upside of this is that when you do feel "happy" your feelings will be genuine and deep - not a result of a chemical substance.

Create a vision board
One of the secrets of sobriety is to make it a positive lifestyle CHOICE - rather than something that you have "had to do" that will just make you feel deprived and miserable.
Sometimes it feels as if all the activities you love involve alcohol but you need to get creative and think "outside the box"
You need to start experimenting with different activities and meeting new people - especially if all your friends are heavy drinkers.
Check out meetup.com to get inspired and try creating a vision board.
If you are artistic then get out your sketchpad and start drawing what you would like your alcohol free life to feel and look like.
Pinterest is also a great tool for this exercise - amazing images and inspirational quotes are available.
Just search "sobriety" and you will be amazed ;-)

Drink more water!
Did you know that up to 75% of your body is made up of water?
So it makes sense that to stay healthy we should be drinking about 2 litres of water a day.
Staying hydrated improves your skin, your digestion, prevents headaches and can stop you feeling sluggish.
But did you know it can also help combat cravings?
Being thirsty can be a trigger for some people so make sure you’re drinking enough of the good stuff.
Buy a big bottle of water and aim to drink it all by the end of the day!

Keep a journal
Journalling is a great tool to help you to understand yourself better.
Treat yourself to an attractive notebook and call it your "sobriety journal".
Every evening jot down how your day has gone, did you get any cravings for alcohol?, did you discover a new alcohol free drink that you enjoyed?
Are you feeling a bit "edgy"?, do you feel like something is missing?
Get those thoughts out of your head and into your journal.
You need to identify your "triggers" so that you know when to expect them and how to deal with them.
Try to act like an "observer" of your own emotions and behaviour.
As time goes on you will probably find yourself reading back in your journal and realising that it's getting just a bit easier with every day that passes.

Meditate!
Perhaps your alcohol free time would be a great opportunity to give meditation a try. As with exercise, we are discovering more and more benefits to meditation.
The human brain is susceptible to a variety of addictions. Apart from the obvious ones another addictive habit that we have is overthinking. In fact, some Buddhists have a phrase for this addiction: ‘monkey mind.’
Overthinking is not merely a distracting habit, it’s also a genuine compulsion that leaves us in a perplexing state, while also having a negative effect on our spiritual development. However, scientists are finally catching up to what Buddhists have known for thousands of years:
Meditation and mindfulness are essential to a healthy mind.”
If you are new to meditation there are some great “apps” around that can help you get started – “Headspace” and “Calm” are both excellent.

Shake it Up!
We often drink for a reason - to escape an uncomfortable emotion or change the way we feel.
So you can't just remove alcohol from your life and expect to be able to leave everything else just as it is.
That will just make you more aware of the alcohol shaped "hole" you have created.
The chances are there is other stuff in your life that needs to change.
Perhaps you need to explore some new activities which don't revolve around drinking alcohol.
At the very least consider changing your routine and your social habits.
Shake it up a bit!
